Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to announce that during April, Rudy Markham and John Pelly commenced their respective roles of chairman and chief executive of the Trust.

Rudy Markham was chief financial officer and an executive member of the board at Unilever, while John Pelly was chief executive of Queen Elizabeth Hospital NHS Trust. Both men bring to their roles vast amounts of top level management experience and a wealth of business acumen.

John Pelly has had a busy, but enjoyable, first few weeks at Moorfields. He said, "I have been greatly struck by the tremendous enthusiasm and loyalty of the staff of Moorfields, as well as the high regard in which Moorfields is held by patients and the public alike." He added, "I am hugely looking forward to building on the successes that Ian Balmer, the former Chief Executive, achieved in his 15 years at the helm.

"I intend to become fully involved with all aspects of the Trust’s activities, in particular our staff, our membership, and our other stakeholders." "With their contribution and support I have no doubt that we will be successful in ensuring that Moorfields remains one of the world’s leading specialist providers of ophthalmic treatment, care, training and research."

Rudy Markham’s expectations for the future of Moorfields are that the Trust "must balance service, growth and profit in order to continue providing the best eye care for all those who come to us for treatment." He added "maintaining effective and efficient patient care with a human touch is our prime task. This means continuing to build on the great work of my predecessor, Sir Thomas Boyd-Carpenter".

Notes for editors:
Opened in 1805, Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is one of the world’s leading centres for ophthalmic treatment and teaching.  It is the oldest and largest specialist eye hospital in the world, and became one of the UK’s first NHS Foundation Trusts in 2004.

With our research partner, the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology, we are embarking on an exciting programme of research in order to find cures for diseases currently untreatable.

The entire range of eye diseases is treated at Moorfields Eye Hospital from cataract, corneal and retinal conditions to complex diseases, and last year over 260,000 patient visits were recorded.
