The Richard Desmond Children’s Eye Centre (RDCEC) has won two more awards for its inventive design. The first is recognition for its architecture from the Civic Trust Awards and the second for its unique exterior lighting at The Lighting Design Awards 2008.
The RDCEC was built as part of Moorfields Eye Hospital Foundation Trust to unite its children’s facilities, making it a global centre of excellence for children with eye problems.
The state-of-the-art building was designed by Penoyre & Prasad Architects following consultation with patients, families and staff on creating an inviting and non-threatening environment.
A spokesperson for the Civic Trust Awards said: “The innovative street facade is functional yet wonderfully different with the design of the louvres based on birds in flight. The sense of scale within the building is successful, and has been carefully considered to accommodate children.”
The lighting scheme which interacts with the sculptured façade was designed by The Light Projects Group and garnered the top lighting prize in the Lighting Design Awards for Exterior Project of the Year. The judges were unanimous in their decision, describing the constantly shifting light display that animates the front of the building as a “visual delight”.
The RDCEC was opened last year by the Her Majesty the Queen, and is now the largest paediatric ophthalmic unit in the world.
