Charitable funds have been vitally important to Moorfields since the foundation of the hospital in 1804. Before the introduction of the NHS in 1948, the hospital relied entirely on endowments, donations and bequests. Since then, charitable monies have been needed to fund leading-edge research, purchase equipment and support improvements to hospital facilities which could not be achieved within the normal limits of NHS funding.
The development of the world’s leading children’s ophthalmic hospital, based at the City Road site, provides a striking example of what can be achieved through charitable donations. This most important of projects was funded through a £15m fundraising appeal and was officially opened by Her Majesty The Queen, the Patron of Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, on 23 February 2007.
